Book recommendation:
"When The Airlines Went to War" by Rbt J. Serling.
ISBN 1-57566-246-9

A good and readable history of a usually overlooked phase of aviation. Lots of anecdotes.

cheers, Boom

Thanks for the tip; reminds me of the uncharitable comments of a C-47 Hump pilot who referred to ATC as "Army of Terrified Civilians."

How many countries made copies of the C47 befor, after, and during WWII? I flew in one in 1950(?) with Capital Airlines. I remember you had to climb a hill to get to the front of the plane.

the Japanese and Russians both built copies of the DC series (Jap Tabby was, I think, a license-built DC-2). Evidently Uncle Joe Stalin didn't think it necessary to pay rights to Donald Douglas for the Iluyshin (?) copies of the Gooney Bird. KLM and other foreign lines purchased DC birds but I do not think the a/c were manufactured overseas.
