Looking for sources that describe activities of 208 RAF at Serny Aerodrome. Specifically interested in April 1, 1918 until they moved to Tramecourt approx. July 27th. CO was Major Christopher Draper. I have "Naval Eight" and "The Mad Major". Any other sources that might convey operational/social activities and/or names of 208 personnel, flight markings, pictures, etc. Many thanks for considering the question.

208 RAF was flying as part of the 10th Army Corps during the "Battle of the Lys" when the Allies threw the Germans back from their March 1918 offensive. They flew with 4 AFC (Camels), 19 (Dolphins), 40 (SE5a), 203 (Camel), and 210 (Camel) RAF. If you check what these squadrons were doing, you may get a good feel for what 208 was doing in this period as they all flew fighters. The Dolphin was not used as a ground attack plane. A lot of it was forcing the Germans back by air-to-air combat and a lot of air-to-ground straffing of trenches and rear areas. A lot of pilots, who survived, this period mention it as even worse than what they had known previously as the work was exceedingly hazardous due to low flying at high speed, frequently heavy ground fire and AA fire.

Hope this helps a bit.

Miles
