Andrew Beauchamp-Proctor

You show the Union Jack next to Andrew Beauchamp-Proctor's name. He was not British but South African. For accuracy sake and to recognize the contribution South Africa made to the war effort this should be corrected. I think your website is fantastic.

Proccy and all other South-Africans flew for the RFC and RAF. My feelings as a South African is that the the Union Jack is the right one for the time period.

OP DIE BOKKE!

So did the New Zealanders, but they have their own flag.

I can admire your nationalistic feelings, but Rosebud is correct...whose flag did Proctor fight under?

Everybody,
There is a serious error in my VC book. Beauchamp-Proctor's first christian name was Anthony, NOT Andrew. My apologies to all.

And still the debate continues...
His gravestone in Mafikeng South Africa reads:

PER ARDUA

ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION

In Memory of
ANDREW F.W. BEAUCHAMP-PROCTOR
VC, DSO, MC and Bar, DFC

Flight Lieutenant - Royal Air Force

Who was accidentally killed during flying practice near
Upavon, England
on 21 June 1921

His body being brought here for interment

Aged 24 years

"I bare you on eagles wings and brought you unto myself"

AND
According to the people at the South African War Museum whom I phoned about this he was Andrew and not Anthony.

The citations for his various awards, including the VC, that appear in the London Gazette all quote Andrew as well.

I'm really puzzled about this. When I first saw the post giving Andrew as his first name I immediately thought 'That's not correct, it was Anthony'. I looked up all my reference books and found it given as Anthony, hence my concern. I can't remember the exact reference for B-P I used when writing the book, but I've always thought of him as Anthony. Maybe I was correct after all. It would be a load off my mind if it really is Andrew!

Thanks all, and a happy 2001, especially to those kind souls who were kind enough to post how much they have enjoyed HITEB.
Alex.
