I have seen it reported that Wolfchen was kept on the J 11 roster in spite of himself. That he attained ten confirmed victories before his death in May '18 shows that he eventually learned the game, but he is described to have been less than stellar at the start, and MvR is known to have posted non-performers out of his squadron on a regular basis.

Apparently, in the summer of 1917, Wolff was a destroyer of the planes he flew, both from enemy-inflicted damage and poor landings. What is interesting is the reason offered for HJW's retention... it was reported that he had previously rescued MvR from a dangerous situation in the air, and this was something the Baron had never forgotten. Not sure of the source, I believe this was reported in one of Kilduff's many books. Can anyone relate the details of what Wolfchen did to aid MvR?

Mark,

HJ Wolff was also MvR's wing man in March and April 1918. HJ Wolff was performing this duty while witnessing MvRs dive and pursuit of a certain Sopwith Camel in the morning of April 21, 1918.
