The life in the trenches was very hard. There were a lot of soldiers dying from the poor living conditions. But most deaths were from being shot or shelled by the Germans. There are still logbooks out there, which have sad stories.
A lot of people suffered from World War 1, a lot of people died in all of the countries that fought on Britain's, Germany's or the peace keeper's sides. But there were only 2 reasons why it started: -
1. The Austrians were going to attack Serbia
2. Some Bosnian assassins attacked the Austrian, Franz Ferdinand.
Their Germans started to approach Belgium and Britain dug some trenches. The Germans arrived and they were confident that they could defeat the British in a few weeks. It turned into Moths, and ended up being 5 years…

TO BE CONTINUED

I look forward with interest to the next instalment.
You certainly write succinctly.i.e. no wasted words like the rest of us.

"It turned into Moths, and ended up being 5 years…"
And that was not a good thing for the men wearing woolen uniforms.

Pretty good, but I'd reverse the order of events. In other words, the assassination of the Archduke came before the potential attack on Serbia by Austro-Hungarian forces.

The origins and conduct of the war are often over-simplified. Who wants to argue, for example, that the war was fought to defend the sovreighty of a state that was the "terrorist haven" of its day (Serbia being the base of the notorious "Black Hand". For some challanging interpretations of the war, see Niall Ferguson, THE PITY OF WAR (London, Penguin Press, 1998, ISBN 0-465-05712-8) - almost certain to enrage people of whatever nationality for its exploration of history, myths, and such diverse topics as war finance, treatment of prisoners, and the effectiveness of various armies as killing machines.
