I have read that Voss was buried by British troops next to where he crashed at Plum Farm. Can anyone locate this for me, next to a town, the closest one possible? Is there any record about where he was buried. I did see a photo in C+C years ago of the field.

Charley,

Just north of Frezenberg in the same area as Borry Ferme and Frost House, probably between the Ypres - Zonnebeke road and the Hanebeek.

Hope this helps, Plum itself is not marked on any of my maps. The grid ref is 28C.24.C.8.3 according to Alex Revell.

best regards

Darryl

Having checked my trench maps and found Plum Farm: The nearest big town is Ypres: take the N313 from Ypres NE to Wieltje then continue NE towards Fortuin on the minor road, not the road to St.Julien. There are two left turns before you reach Fortuin, and matching the trench map to a current road map Plum Farm is south of the minor road you are on, somewhere between the two left turns in the fields. Total distance is about 4KM from the centre of Lille, roughly ENE.

PS, if you ever go there be sure to stop at the Menin Gate at Ypres just before 8pm and listen to the last post sounded there every night by local Fire Brigade buglers: they've been doing it for over 70 years and it's the most moving thing ever.

hope that helps,

Bob

Now I've looked again that's not quite right - firstly the two left turns are RIGHT turns; Secondly, one of them appears to merge into a motorway: so here goes again:
Take the N313 as before, follow it under the motorway as if towards St.Julian and take the first right turn after the motorway. There's a left turn just after: if you turn left and stop, and look south, you'll be looking over the fields concerned.
Sorry about the previous stuff, I'd just got back from the pub. I've had a black coffee since.

Thanks very much, this is really helpful information. I am hoping to come back with photos, but I may not get to this for a year. Will keep you posted.
