In his own words:
"My story about fighter tactics is written round fighter pilots and the aeroplanes thay flew. The men were more important than the aeroplanes. Their prestige stood high, for they were the defenders of the people and sometimes they, and they alone, stood between victory and defeat. They lived a strange life, which alternated between short periods of intense excitement in the air, when they did not have enough time, and long spells on the ground , whwn they had too much. Once in the air they had the gift of becoming part of their fighters. Their morale was very high. In adversity they were bigger than their normal selves. Their devotion was well hidden beneath an outward flippancy."
