Dang good first ever drawing effort! Don't be shy with the shading...go ahead and be a bit more agressive with the shadows, and you'll have something that could easily compete with the "pros".
I was interested in your mention on the site of the found watercolors. Any chance you can scan those and make them available?

Thanks folks!. I had enough trouble getting the fuselage to look roundish, but more shadow will be added as I get the hang of drawing and improve the images.
The watercolours are in Cologne at present, on loan to the city museum, but as soon as I get them back I'll scan some and post the url. There's 24, what a goldmine find it was. They are the reason for my interest in WW I aviation history - after 30 years studying the Luftwaffe of the second world war.
Thanks again.

Do you mean on this site? Anyway, Stepeler is documented in various archive sources at the Bundesarchive (Freiburg branch). If I remember correctly, he was the first pilot of Jasta 50 to shoot down an enemy aircraft, or some other achievement, which brought him personal congratulations from Ernst Udet. He was asked by Udet to join him in a 'Flying Circus' (maybe as tech adviser?) after the war, but he declined, preferring to remain in Nth Germany with his family.
I believe he was associated with JG1 or JG 2 during WW II, also. I think he was an adviser on wing design and aerodynamics to Foke-Wulf from 1943.

Hi Mark
Does the material in Freiburg includes Tagesbefehl from Kofl 7, or weekly/Daily Kofl7 reports...?
I am interested in this material if they have it...any reference-numbers is welcome..!

Ken:
I can not find anything in the Jasta war diaries for Jasta 2,11 and 50. Heinz Stepeler is not listed in Bodenschatz's book, "Jagd im Himmel". He is not listed in any of Neal O'Connor's 6 German Awards books and he is not listed in the 1917 and 1918 monthly victories lists in the Luftstreitkräfte Nachrichtenblatt. He is credited with 27victories? Amazing! Caution gentlemen, caution!
Blue skies,
Dan-San Abbott
P.S. Rick, what do you have on Ltn. Heinz Stepeler??
