Hi Steve,
I have seen also where Fokker factory olive is given as the colour. I have also seen claims that it was yellow. The yellow theory comes from the fact that orthochromatic film was used by the German offical photographer when they photographed Jasta 10 approx early Sept. 1917. The cowlings on their Pfalz D.III fighters is known to be chrome yellow. Because of the fact that orthochromatic film is heat sensitive and the fact that yellow is a "hot" colour , the yellow cowlings on the Pfalz fighters shows a very dark colour. Some say the cowling on the triplane is also yellow. No one will ever know for sure.

Hope I helped you

This subject was covered extensively and acrimoniously about a year ago. I expect many are still gun shy about this subject but the upshot was there is solid evidence for the cowling to have been the olive brown that was used for the factory finish camoflage streaking.Karl Timm, Vosss Mechanic described it as such. For any and all other colors there is nothing but conjecture that is insubstantially supported.
HTH,
Terry

Hi Steve,

Since the reply that was posted following mine noted Karl Timm, Werner Voss’s mechanic, I thought you might find this of interest…
Cross and Cockade Vol. 23 No.2 notes a book published in 1963 named “War Planes in Battle Dress 1914 –1918”. The article went on to say that Karl Timm approved the colour plate of Fokker F.I 103/17 in the book.
You should seek out a copy of Albatros Production’s “von Richthofen’s Flying Circus” by Greg van Wyngarden. I believe more than one of Karl Timm’s photographs of F.I 103/17 appear in this quality book. If a friend does not have a copy it is available from Albatros Productions located at 10 Long View, Berkhamsted, Herts, H4P 1BY, U.K.
I have also noted that your e-mail address is in the U.K. There is a man who lives in Harpenden, Herts whom you should seriously consider looking up named Alex Imrie. Alex is a noted expert on World War 1 aviation who owns Karl Timm’s photo album and knew Timm quite well. The photographs in circulation from Karl Timm’s photograph collection originated with Alex. He would be well worth seeking out.

All the best,
Marlon Schultz
