Ok, I'm stuck. I know Ernie married Elenore Zink but that's all I know about those two besides the fact they were high school sweethearts and worshiped eachother. Now in further research I have found that Ernst was on the phone only minutes before he shot himself in 1941 with his mistress. He called her to tell her that "they" (most likely the Gestapo) were on to him and he just couldn't deal with his life anymore. There is no mention of Lo during this time of his life in the Luftwaffe. Now did she die? Did they devorce? Anyone who can shed some light on this subject I would be greatly appreciative.

I spoke too soon, I found the information I was looking for as far as the Lo subject goes. They devovced in 1923 due to his womanizing and heavy drinking.

I found some additional info in Nowarra´s book about Udet. Both married on 25. February 1920. Udet left Lo on 16. February (1923?) and married not again. Udet had many women later but only two more serious affairs - at first with Countess Margot von Einsiedel (since 1924). She was married and had two children. He paid for the countess who was living in the hotel "Four Seasons" in Munich - so he was needing always money for her and his own lifestyle. In 1933 "Udlinger" (his nick name) got to know Inge Bleyle - the third important woman in his life. He phoned her in his last night too. She wished to come to him but he said: "Too late!"

Hi All,

An unfortunate end to the greatest surviving German ace of WW1. A great pilot whose legendary luck ran out under the thumb of the Nazis. Not the first great talent they squandered...or the last. Perhaps the true story will never be known.

Best Wishes,
Gary

Tony:

There was a series shown on the History Channel a while back called Hitler's Generals. One of the segments of this series featured Udet, titled "The Devil's General". This episode detailed Udet's last hours, as well as some other insights. Udet had a daughter (out of wedlock?) with a young actress named Ehmi Bessel. While Bessel was giving birth, Udet was partying out of town and was already in another relationship. He sent Ehmi a telegram congratulating her and telling her to name the baby girl Anna-Marie. I guess that didn't set to well with Ehmi, she named her daughter Dinah.

I didn't see this episode for sale at the HistoryChannel.com. I can make a copy of mine for you, but can't make any promises that it will turn out OK.

What was there for the Gestapo to be "on to"?

Well The Gestapo had been researching the fact that most of Udet's deadlines were never met and the research and development of the the Luftwaffe had fallen way behind. He figured they were on to the fact that he was neglecting his job for two resons, one he whole heartedly disagreed with the Nazi Doctrine and he was spending to much time drinking and partying. The Dislike for the Nazi's was the main reason the Gestapo was tailing him.

With his job problems, boozing(probably an alcoholic)and womanizing,it seems like Udet's whole life was out of control.Has it ever occurred to anyone that this may have been the real reason for Udet's suicide?

Paul, that was some of it but the note he did leave behind and the conversation he had with his mistress indicated that the main reason was he was being persicuted by the Gestapo for the failure of the Battle of Britain
