I'm still looking for pictures of German parachutes in WWI. If you have any that I can borrow, copy, steal, or any books to point me toward, it would be a big help. Any Central Powers parachutes in use, on the pilot or plane, or in any other configuration. Everything is helpful. I really need a little help to finish preparation of an article. Thanks!

Hi Stephen,

do you know the german book "Die deutschen Luftstreitkräfte im Weltkriege", written by Georg Paul Neumann? There is a short chapter about the use of parachute within the Luftstreitkräfte and also a few photos. I think I remember a photo of a Paulus-parachute for balloon-observers and a few others of Heinecke parachutes for pilots.

Kind regards, Immo

Stephen,

In "Air Aces of theAustro-Hungarian Empire" by Dr. Martin O'Connor there are several photos of pilots and observers in parachute harnesses.

There is one that stands out on page 181 that shows Freidrich Hefty under an open canopy after he was shot down on 22/8/18. He was the first Austro-Hungarian airman to be saved by parachute.

Cross and Cockade volume 15 no. 4 has a picture of the same event on page 353, but from a closer range and a different angle. It is interesting that on page 354 there is a photo of Hefty standing next to the wreckage of his plane. He is NOT smiling...

Hope this helps..
Scotty

Greetings Sopwith21: There is a color drawing of the Ritter von Schleich wearing a Heinicke seat pack 'jump sack' on page 123 of a book: "Aces and Aircraft of WWI" Crown Pubs, 1984. This view only shows the front harness arrangement. Send more when I get more. Billy H 4/11/01.
