Hi all,
I'm an avid reader of WWII books and just recently decided to make the switch to something different: WW1 aviation. I'm 21 years old and and interested in hearing opinions for a good 'starting book' on WW1 aviation? I don't mind if it's fiction or non-fiction as long as it is interesting and moving! Let me know! Thanks!

Steel & Hart, "Tumult in the Clouds" (1999)

should fit the bill for the British side of things. It is a chronological narrative, although it does have some thematic chapters, illustrated with first person quotes from the Imperial War Museum archives. Very evocative. Highly recommended.

'Winged Victory' by Victor Yeates and 'Flying Fury' by James McCudden VC,both have recently been reprinted in paperback. They are the two finest books written by either about WW1 Scout Pilots.

Oops, meant to say either side. Also anything you can find that was written by Ira 'Taffy' Jones will be highly entertaining.

A great book for someone just getting into WW1 aviation is: They Fought for the Sky by Quentin Reynolds. At last check it was available from Aeroplane Books in Virginia for about $12.00. Their website is: www.aeroplanebooks.com. This covers almost all aspects of WW1 aviation.

How about Thomas Funderburk's "The Fighters" ? Nice overview from all sides - Allied and Axis - and contains many first hand accounts. I remember this book as being one of the few that totally captured my imagination and, as a bonus, introduced me the the Society of WW I Aviation Historians (now the League of WWI AH).
Best,
-Mike

I'd recommend "Knights of the Air:Canadian Fighter Pilots in the First World War" by Dave Bashow. It was just published last year.

"Allies and Axis"??? Um, the Axis was WWII.

VBR,

I'd recommend Eddie Rickenbacker's autobiography (but I can't remember the exact title...see my French reference to only one cup of coffee).

Get a copy of "Red Baron 3D" software package. Not only can you learn a lot about WWI aviation, you can "fly". The owners manual is pretty good.
