John:
The SSW.D.I entered Jasta service in February with Jasta 7 and by the end od May 1917 all were withdrawn from all the Jasta which had been equipped with the SSW.D.I.
Harleyford's "Fighter Aircraft of 1914-1918 War" was first published in 1960, a whole lot of information has been unearthed in the last 40 years through the collective efforts of a lot of researchers looking for the truth, like yourself.

There are several British combat reports that mention "purple" on the top wing of German scouts.

Dan, I, and I'm sure a lot of other people, can't thank you enough for your dedication and effort in helping enthusiasts like ourselves to make the best possible, historically accurate flying models of these aircraft. This goes for all who have contributed to these forum discussions. Cheers!

Bill, If you have been reading the responses from Dan-San Abbott you see that the color was NOT purple. I am sure that under certain lighting conditions and when painted next to other darker colors it is possible that lilac or mauv could look purple. I guess if mauv or lilac was painted over a brown or red-ish brown it may take on a purple-ish hue also. I think the document that Dan has provided pretty much eliminates the actual color of purple from being used. Cheers!

The RFC Intelligence Report on the Jasta 4 Albatros of Clausnitzer, captured July 16, 1917, says the upper surfaces were green and PURPLE.

Hi Bill, If I were building a model of this particular Albatros and had this documentation and a color profile I guess I would use "purple" but who can really know what hue of purple? I wouldn't assume that it was purple as we know it to be today especially when there is such documentation as has been provided by Dan-San Abbott. Again, if mauv or lilac was painted over brown in accordance with the IDFLIEG telegram it may have taken on a more purple-ish look. The best way to find out is to try painting something in this manner with the paints as documented by the Methuen color code. I think any thing else is pure conjecture.
