I wonder why so many people are in disbelief at the heroics of men during WWI and WWII. If you weren't there you must rely on the evidence that supported the awarding for the heroic act.

With the sole exception of myself, anyone who contributes to this thread is an idiot, no matter what they think of Billy Bishop.

In my time of admiring history and the people who made it, I have come to beleive that history iteself is a hero. Sure we as a people have had badtimes to go through, but hero's are always there no matter what.

Dangit, Observer beat me to it....
The concept of heroism has been SO badly diluted that it no longer has meaning to a huge segment of the American public, especially the under 40-somethings. For years now, Americans have held victims in greater regard than heroes, and many people are no longer are capable of distinguishing between celebrity and heroism. Missing the playoffs is, BTW, decidedly not heroic.

Have you noticed the improvement in the spelling and grammar of both Ginger and the Observer? Let them be role models to you.

I for one, am tired of seeing people like Michael Jordan, Hulk Hogan, and other sports figures called "heroes". I also deplore the use of the term "sports hero". There's no such animal.

I've seen sports celebrities who did things that took guts. I've seen them over come adversity to win in spite of the odds. But what they did in the venue of sports was NOT heroic.

For me, the so-called sports hero, does not exist.

With regard to Billy Bishop. Even if you are not convinced of his WWI heroics. You can not deny his WWII heroics. He sacrificed himself in a tireless effort to make sure that the British Empire, and Canada had the men to fight back the German hordes that flew over the channel and tried to destroy Britain.

Really now, Albert! And what of Lou Gehrig?
And you should really take the time to read THE PITY OF WAR, just recently published, available at Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Borders, etc...

I can't believe that anyone would even want to discuss this topic.

We really have got it so good, haven't we? We think we're so smart that we can define things such as heroism, and who is, and who isn't.

The people that we discuss on this forum experienced things that we could never even dream of. Who are we to brand one, or another heroes or not?

Englishman (Idiot, no doubt).
