News item from The Aeroplane, issue of October 24th 1917.
'The Canadian papers report that Major Bishop VC.DSO.RFC., entertained an admiring crowd to a marvelous exhibition of flying on one of the instruction aeroplanes at Leaside Camp on October 18th. A young cadet in another machine proceeded to imitate his feats, and accomplished everything that Major Bishop had done. The cadet was placed under close arrest for deviating from the instructions given him before he ascended.'

Reminds me of the time I pointed out to the chief accountant that he had made an incorrect entry in the ledger.
I got fired.

Reminds me of Buzz Beurling, shining it on for the RCAF guys..basiclly outflying them before he was a military pilot. He didn't like RCAF since they regected them for various reasons. After becoming Aces of Aces for the Malta Campaign as a RAF flyer, the RCAF was basically sucking his big toe for a publicity tour. He was a really quirky guy though, I don't think he rubbed their face in it.

Story doesn't surprise me. Bishop himself admitted that he was a lousy flyer. His marksmanship, though, was reputed pretty good.

I don't suppose the article named the cadet in question?

Oh, I'll try and keep my responses short from now on, I don't want anyone thinking I'm trying to hide the "weakness" of my arguments.

Dear Alex,
This reminded me of Lewis' (no relation) account, from Sagitarius Rising, of the hot shot but inexperienced cadet who "pranged" his kite (and was killed) after an impromptu display of acrobatics; it seemed that his handling was so ham-fisted that the aircraft (an SE-5a) just broke apart internally from all the stress; even Lewis watching on the ground knew what was about to happen. And damned if it didn't; Mike Baram likes to call a variety of our experiences trivial, but it seems to me the way we meet our own end as being the most trivial.
On a happier note: Al, why not label those who are pro-Bishop "Bishopites", while those who are anti-Bishop... well... how about "Bishoprics" ?
And what's with this "Ignorant One"? Sackcloth and ashes? And Cross and Cockade won't have you? And after the influence of your website? Your money isn't green enough? I'm sure they'll take Canadian...

Capt. Lewis!!
The moniker of "the Ignorant one" is my half-hearted attempt at levity in reponse to the message from Hannes, located at http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/thread.cgi?7652,37,26, which if from a thread I originated, titled "Stories from the Other side". In fact, it's only a couple of messages up from your last response in that thread.
I'd explain further, but I have to keep this short so people don't think I'm trying to hide any weak arguments.
VBR,
