Does anyone know what type of coverage National Geographic magazine did on WWI aviation? I also wonder if the magazine ever visited the various regions related to WWI in the aftermath of the war.

I do know that there's a nice article on Quentin Roosevelt's crash site in the Smithsonian's Air & Space about 1992-ish....

Hi Tim:

I have a National Geographic issue from Jan 1918. This whole issue is devoted to WWI avaition. There are articles written by Bishop about Ball and other articles. I don't have it with me at the moment, but could look up the remaining articles later.

It had some nice articles on WW I Naval aviation as well. Really some amazing stuff. There was one issue post war that dealt with the war's aftermath I recall. If you need issue dates I can track them down for you I believe.

Best wishes,
John

Thanks for the great leads. National Geographic is a fine publication and I will make every attempt to track these issues down. Any issue dates will be appreciated, I am anxious to see what they did.

Also, National Geographic has produced a series of CD Roms containing every issue every published up to the 1990's. It is cheaply priced and takes up a lot less space(!)than the magazines.

You will find several intersting articles with photos from the period.

Some time back there was an off topic discussion on the loss of the USS Maine in 1898. Ive found the NG article since then in vol 193 issue 2 feb 1998. Well worth a read.
