Neiuport 28 1n 1918

Hi Does anyone know if the 95th squadron would still be using any Neiuport 28s during or after February 1918. When were they issued SPADs Thanks Brad

They didn't switch to SPADs until May-June 1918, the same time the 94th Aero switched to SPADs.

The 95th Aero received Nieuports in February 1918 and flew their first patrol over enemy lines (unarmed) on March 6, 1918. The 95th retired their N.28's in favor of the Spad in mid July 1918.

The Nie28 wasn't as good a plane as the V strut Nie17, 23, 24 and 27. Very fast but would blow the leading edge and fabric off the upper wing.
I think the V strutters were more manuverable.

"Forumites" should know that Brad has his own N-28 flying and is planning, he writes me, on doing a revision of his paint scheme to honor

Sumner Sewall of the 95th. SS led all 95 pilots in "hours in the air", was a 6 victory ace, and later Governor of Maine.
"First To The Front" the excellent, and possibly my favorite, WWI Aviation book, by Charles Wooley on the 95th is an augmentation of Waldo Heinrich's diary. It establishes that the # "0" was used on both the '28 and the SXIII as flown by SS.
