From somewhere, I have a vague memory that, at least on the Allied side, streamers were used to designate the flight leaders, two for the Flight leader, and one for A/flight leader, or was that Hollywood?

The RFC/RAF did use streamers. Sometimes they were attached to wing struts, sometimes to the tail.

I have seen British/Commonwealth types in a couple of musuems, they were red and about six foot long. The German one I saw was blue and about the same length. That one had been attached to the message cylinder informing our side of the death of Albert Ball.

Streamers were used on both sides. Ernst Udet had red and white streamers on his elevators while Lothar von Richthofen had them on the lower wings and were red white and black. The French attached them to the wing struts like Georges Guynemer, he had a black one on his Starboard wing strut. If memory serves me it was Black with a white border. I think at one time he also had "Vuiex Charles" written on his streamer in white. I know I had a picture of it before.

Fred,
how do you know that???
If you are asking questions on this Forum just to see if anyone's as clever as you it will soon dawn that these lads play second fiddle to no man.

Ginger: I swear, it was a different 'fred'. That the absolute last thing I would challange is anyone's ability to best me is historical knowledge. I know damned little, and sometimes I think I'm losing what I had.

A rank imposter has usurped my name, which is like stealing trash, however...

Sorry Fred Old Chap,
welcome to the Squadron, polish your goggles then double outside, you're on the Dawn Patrol.Follow the SE with the red streamer and the big G on the wing and we'll have a pike over the Salient.
Don't worry it happens sometimes on this Forum. They even pretend to be me and I have the honour of being this places thickest, but most fearless Pilot.
You make an enquiry round here and these Lads can take you back 85 years in the blink of an eye and make it seem like yesterday. This is something the mickey takers never seem to grasp.
Break left Fred!!!
That stripy venetian blind on your tail is one of Dan's funny coloured Tripes!!!

I thank you, and intend to hang around and learn for a while. I find this kind of available detail facinating.
