Are there any info of volunteers from the nordic countries (Sweden,Norway,Denmark,Finland,Iceland) available ?
I have never heard of any nordic flyers participating in any air arm in WW1, but you'll never know.....

Tryggve Gran
A Norwegian naval Lt. and a volunteer on Scott's last expedition, he was talking with Lawrence Oates when Oates confessed his hatred of all foreigners, because he thought that they hated England and would band together against her. Gran at once promised Oates that if England ever went to war, he would volunteer to serve. Gran and Oates were friends after that; Oates died famously on the trip back from the pole and Gran volunteered for the RNAS. I believe he help found the Norwegian navy's air arm when the war was over.

Erik Henning Nelson who served in the USAS during WW I and flew in the 1924 Round the World Flight was, I believe Swedish, although he was living in the US at enlistment.

There was a significant number of Swedish volunteers in the German army, though most fought on the Eastern front and I have no idea wether there were any flyers among them.

Axel

Lars,

the German pilot Euringer mentioned an officer Schumburg (or similar name) serving with FA 300 in his book "Vortrupp Pascha" and called him Swedish or of Swedish descent.
Maybe our Forumite Gunnar Söderbaum has more info about the man but he has vacation.
Some of the names in the Fliegertruppe / Luftstreitkräfte sound nordic but you know there is sometimes no difference between names in Northern Germany and Scandinavia.

Kindly regards,

Hannes
