Hi, i'm new to this forum, but lately have been trying to find info on these aircraft. I've seen a photo or two in my Janes book, but was wondering if anyone knew of any other resource for me to find anything else about them. Any and every bit of help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Travis,

the one source for the German R planes is

The German Giants
by
G W Haddow and Peter M Grosz
published by Putnam

ISBN: 0 85177 812 7

Great Book, all you want to know about these monsters of the skies (ok, personally I'd like to now even more about that Poll Giant)

The book should still be available today. If not, you will always find it at abebooks.com (they had around 20 available just now)

term 5-engined giant most likely means a Zeppelin R.IV or Zeppelin R.V bomber. "German Giants" is the best reference on the subject, but youŽll find quite a bit on them in the net as well...just fire up your fave search engine with words "Zeppelin Staaken" or the type names above...

Coincidentally, just an hour ago I was painting the lozenges to the top wing of my 1/72 R.V
Should be ready in a month or two...

Thanks all, I'll surely check out the book and search the net. What company makes the model, and where did you get it? I have many 1/72 scale WW1 bombers and fighters. That'd be a great addition to my collection.

FYI, if you are searching for used books, check out addall.com It searches a large number of used book sites, and gives a lot of good sources.

Best of luck, those planes are fun to read about.

VBR,

John

This oneŽs scratchbuilt item...as far as I know, only Staaken R.VI (the most numerous variant) has been available as a model kit and it was many many years ago. It was a vacform kit (canŽt remeber by whom) and surely unavilable by now. So if you want one, youŽll have to do it yourself all the way !

The kit is a 1/72 vacform by Contrail. Hard to get.Occasionally, one will pop up on eBay....but prepare to bid big.I've seen it go for minimum $118 and maximum $550(!yikes!).
Haven't done mine yet. My estimation that it should take,oh,most of a year of all my free time.Quite a beast!
