I'm still trying to find out details of Vfw F Altemeier's victory over a French Sopwith Triplane on 26th September 1917.

The details that I've seen differ so wildly from the French reports that I'm very confused. I have now seen a photograph of the triplane in question, and tend towards the German report rather than the French one.

What was Altemeier flying, an Albatros DVa?

Can anyone help please?????

You will find an excellent article on Jasta 24s in the US Cross and Cockadre Journal Vol 21 #1. by Rick Duiven. This article was made directly from the Kreigstagbuch of Jasta 24. Also the book The Sky Their Battlefield refers to the 26 September claims for triplanes by Altemeier and Wakcwitz.

Hi Mike

I am not the best person to answer this question but as Lucien M stated in a earlier thread most French Sopwith Triplanes were bought directly from the factory and therefore not had RNAS serials when arriving to the French...so is "16" really the same as N5388...?

5388 where reported in the monthly German list of captured a/c with a dead pilot and it is reported first in the list of Triplanes which indicates it was shot down early in September and very unlikely(but not impossible) over the North sea...
If it was shot down over sea the s/n ought to be unknown and also the fate of the pilot...

Something very strange here...!

Lucien where are you..?

Thanks Gunnar,

Lucien is as mystified as I am. This Triplane was definately suppled to the French Navy in July, and when supplied was almost certainly in RNAS markings. The photo shows French tricolour cockades, RNAS serial, but no "escadrille" number.

The French records indicate that Quarter-Master Le Garrec was shot down over the North Sea in this aircraft, but not on the 26th. Judging by the photograph the German records have the location (Commines) correct, therefore I lean towards then having the date correct as well!

Hi again Mike....I really like your eagerness to find an answer..

I just re-read the article of Jasta 24 by Rick Duiven which are based on the KTB where it is stated that Altemeiers victory fell within allied lines...!

This means that we most certain can exclude Altemeier as the victor(if it is a correct statement) of N5388 as it fell within German hold lines...

It also means that Altemeiers victory could be a pilot who walked away unwounded from his Triplane to fly the next day...

Unfortunate I dont have the Kofl 4 for this week which could be used for double-checking
