I have just aquired a photo album with some original pictures of WW1 planes in.. I'm not an expert but they are biplanes and a few of the pictures show them crashed. There is one picture of a what I suppose in those days was a heavy bomber with it's props going round being looked at by lots of people. The other thing is that the album is Australian and there are also a lot of pictures showing officers (in riding breeches ??) and "other ranks" in what looks like anzac hats (the ones pinned up at one side). I have one name (Lt.C W Manning -NSW) and I'm fairly sure people in the piccys are Austrailian (WW1 airforce or army).

Also I have the serial numbers of some of the planes in the piccys ... F9751, F9771 & D2687.

The album also seems to cover a family journey from Austrailia to somehwere else because they spent a lot of time on a boat...the "Aberdeen".

The album must be an important part of a families history because from what I can tell it begins with the children in Victorian era prams and ends with what may be the same people, fighting and/or flying for King & Country.

If anybody can help me identify the period, the place, the airforce etc. I'd be pleased to email the pictures.

Best regards.

Tony.

G'Day Tony

I'm an Aussies with more than a passing interest in your query. I'd very much like to see some of your pics and help you identify them.

Just to get you started both F9771 and F9751 were Avro 504J or 504K Trainers which are both listed as being with No 7 Training Squadron Australian Flying Corps. This squadron was at Leighterton from February 1918.

D2687 is a bit harder. If it was D2697 I could say it was a Sunbeam powered Bristol Fighter which was on charge with 7 Training Sqn AFC at one point. Could you check that one?

Get in contact with me if you are interested in my input.

Tony,
You are in luck! You could not reasonably expect for a better or smarter man than Gordon to answer your query. I have known Gordon for many years, and he has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things regarding Australian aviation. If anyone knows the details to your enquiry, it is Gordon. My suggestion is to email them to him immediately. He will be able to help you out.

Tony, D2867 was a Bristol Fighter, used by AFC in training unit as Steve suggests. I have it in the log book of H J Crews, ex NSW State Aviation School. He was in it on 28-2-'19 for 10 mins;"1 curcuit aerodrome, engine dud. Landed in field next aerodrome>" and 24-2-19,"SELF. Bristol Fighter 2687 , First Solo;35 mins, 3'000ft aerodrome Tetbury, R&L turns.
Twice on 8-3-19.Passenger Cadet O'Shea. Formation flying, formation broken up twice. Later, forced landing, engine dud. Certifies location, type, AFC,known pilot. You have a valuable relic.

Tony, by valuable I mean 'precious historic record'. Crews flew F- 9751 10 times between 7-1-19 and 7-2-19, doing cloud dodging, bombing, aerial fighting practice, etc. Photo 5 in your pics.

Thanks for the info, I'm not into WW1 aircraft or crews or anything like that but I thought I'd like to try and get the thing back to the relatives -if there are any...

I suppose I'll have to stick it on the EBay Auction site and see what happens, they seem to have lots of people who buy military pictures etc.

Do you want me to let you know when it's up there ?

Best regards

Tony.

Tony,

Two points. First to you. I suggest you would probably get more for the photos by selling them here, and there would be a better chance of them eventually getting to the relatives of the photo subjects.

Second point to Neville, Gordon was the supplier of the information about the aircraft, not I - I don't have ANY of my books here at my place, all at a very trusted friend's place.

Hi,

You could well be right, but I have alrerady put it on .... If anyone is interested it's easy to bid on anything on Ebay .. you just register and away you go .. it's an excellent site for finding militaria etc.

I'll put a message on here with the item number, it may help people to find the album if they want it.

Thanks for the advice.

Regards

Tony.
