Okay,

I did get to the museum.. which wasnt much help. It was busy, from what I suspect as "holiday" traffic. As far as getting to take a tour of Red Mountain Aero services.. It didnt work out. The owner of the shop wasnt in over the weekend, so I am re-scheduling my visit. I will post more after I talk with him.

I had posted this on a different subject when I meant to post it on this UPDATE subject........................................... ..

Just posting a message about the status of full-scale aircraft production at the Old Kingsbury Aerodrome near San Antonio, Texas.

1. The Fokker D.VII project continues though things have been slow since the holidays. A new gas and oil tank have been fabricated and partially installed. The livery will be that of von Hantelmann's aircraft.

2. An older Fokker Dr.I project that had been put on hold pending movement to the present new facility is back on track. The wings have been taken out of storage and need one more sanding and coat of varnish. Fabrication of wing fittings is next. The fuselage is 80% complete. A fuel tank is being fabricated for it. The LeRhone engine that will be used has returned from the refurbishing company and looks beautiful. Appears brand new.......it's still in the crate. The livery is undecided.

3. The JN4 Canuck is nearing completion. Covering has been completed on the wings, tail surfaces and turtledeck. The OX-5 engine is in the initial stages of rebuild. The livery (which I don't personally like) will be that of a barnstormer.

4. Fuselage fittings are being constructed for an SE5a. Wing ribs are being built in Houston (by yours truly) and I have made 8 full size ribs and 13 false ribs.............so that makes me about 10% complete !!!

5. We've picked up a Bristol F2B project to complete. We don't have a Rolls-Royce engine to give it so it will be powered by a 250-275(?) hp Hisso.

6. It's been determined that we'll have to re-cover our Thomas-Morse Scout. The fabric is more than 10 years old and is in dire need of replacement. We'll probably re-cover it the same time we cover the D.VII and the Dr.I.

Hello and happy 2002!

So far my own project Fokker D7 is still in the planning/tooling-up phase. Probably will be for a while longer. I am doing other smaller projects along with it to keep busy and to learn new skills and refresh old ones. I am taking machine shop/welding courses at a local community college. So far its been a success.

Until then I am planning on building a couple of R/C planes just to keep busy and to familiarize myself with the structures of the plane I want to build. That and my wife wants an Albatross built. Anyone know of any good R/C kits out there?? So far so good! Thanks..

Hi There,

just for those who are interested.

Some of you may know about my erlier Fokker Dr.I repros. Some time ago I started with the development of a set of drawings for the Fokker D.VI and also started to construct one.

There is absolutely no deadline set for this and time is rare for me, too, at present since I am busy with my website and with some of my new books on the topic of early German aviation. I also recently missed to aquire a original Oberursel Ur.II which, if it would have been successfull, might have pushed that project ahead.

Anyway, to make it short, there are only some minor things completed so far. These are: the airscrew and the rudder (the later one presently only partially covered to use as display piece in my living room), some fuselage fittings including the engine bearing corners, undercarriage attachment sockets...the ribs of the tail plane are completed, too, and so are the mounting ring for the engine cowling, rudder pedals, ammo box, undercarriage traverse...

Here are some photoraphs for you. I especially hope to encourage those of you who are not yet certain at all how and with what to start on their own project to finally get started!

Have fun all!

Achim

To all ,
I need to purchace the AXIAL prop stickers used on German aircraft, for my DR1 project.
Does anyone know who manufactures these things ?
Just an update:
Finished covering the subwing this weekend. I will be sanding and painting the entire landing gear assembly over the next two weeks.
Hope to be taxing this aircraft around by this Summer.

Happy Landings!

The past two weeks have been very productive at the Old Kingsbury Aerodrome in Kingsbury, Texas. The Curtiss JN-4 project continues on track for a hopeful fly date of April 15 this year. Final fittings are being added to the fuselage which is almost ready for covering. The wings and control surfaces are finished and covered. Work on the OX-5 continues and should be complete soon.

We finished blasting, priming and painting all remaining metalwork on the Fokker D.VII. (except the N-struts which will be fabricated near completion of the remainder of the aircraft). We just need to run control cables and cover the airframe. Covering the top wing will be done last as it is so large and of one piece it needs to be installed once covered. It would no longer be able to be hung from the wall. We still haven't begun work on the engine but we estimate it will be flying in 6 months.

Wing ribs are slowly being built for the SE5a. There was a brief hiatus around Christmas and New Year due to illness as well as the holidays. I just calculated that I need about 615 more feet of 1/2 inch capstrip to finish the ribs. Those 30 piece ribs don't go together very fast.

Not much progress has happened to the Fokker Triplane. The wings had been in storage for quite some time and we had to get rid of bird's and wasp nests. The wings are now clean and ready to have fittings fabricated and installed.

And as if we don't have enough to do, we started building rib jigs for a Sopwith Triplane. Fortunately someone at the Sopwith design facility was using their head and decided to use plywood webs. The ribs are made of 5 pieces each.
