Couldn't find my newsletters in a quick search, but believe the contact below, will do the trick.But FIRST, please let me say that the absolute deifinitive source for most of your questions and those of anyone considering a replica or repro of any size-is "WWI Aero". All other sources combined cannot compare to the wealth of information and experience that has been written by the builders themselves in this membership and full magazine, over the past 40 years. It is now nearly 600 pages per year and only a few pages of ads. It also has free wants and disposal ads. Filled with detailed reports of almost any WWI based airplane project (ever), and it lists the contact information for almost every one of them. Leo Opdycke has been behind it since the beginning and is supported by the best historians, and builders in the world,who contribribute their reports, often profusely illustrated. Leo prefers phone or mail memberships at WWI AERO; 15 Crescent Rd.; Poughkeepsie, NY, 12601. You'll newver find a better source of experienced information. Hi Darrin,
I am the treasurer for the Great War Airplanes Association and I invite anyone with an interest to join.
Our group is the remnants of The First Warplanes Association along with a transfusion of new energetic blood. The late Frank Ryder headed up the whole thing, and many of us owe a great deal to him for his efforts, energy, and funds spent on this interest. His most outward aspect of his efforts was his bi-annual airshows and his museum, which our honorable list member Joe Gertler headed up. Frank had good fortune in business and he generously helped builders/flyers of WW1 aircraft to attend the event by assisting with the cost of getting folks there, paying for their hotel, aviation gas, etc. He held a large banquet and recognized outstanding contributors to the WW1 aviation field with awards. With him working so hard on these events, his collecting of material for his museum, and the putting together of his own "WW1 air force", all contributed to spurring on the builders that were out there sitting on their duffs and it brought us together. After Frank's passing we were able to carry on, and his efforts helped to hatch other groups like our GWAA, Roger Freeman's venture in Kingsbury, the St. Louis Group, the Dawn Patrol in Kansas City, and I'm sure many others.
Our main focus has been our bi-annual event at the U.S.A.F. Museum in Dayton.
I would suggest getting together with guys that are somewhat close to you. Roger Freeman may be the closest to you that is really active. As you know, Tony on the list here is working on the D.VII, and he mentioned they are getting down the Dr.I frame, and they may be working on a D.VIII as well. This would be a great opportunity for you as you have expressed interest in building a D.VII and they are working on one. You could possibly "piggy-back" into some of the things they are doing for their project, and it would end up saving both of you money. I mentioned Rick Ivansek is in Arizona and I know he is doing a really great Pfalz D.XII replica and may be of help since you are doing an axis aircraft.
Our group, GWAA, is still growing and it looks as if we will be getting some real help with funding for getting notable aircraft to our airshow in 2003. That has always been the problem with putting these airshows together, the cost of getting your plane to the show! We were able to get Roger up from Texas with his aircraft a couple of times, but the costs were simply too much for him, and now he has his Kingsbury Foundation in full swing, so he is not so interested in coming to our show, unless he receives monetary assistance.
It is the same situation for Javier Arango in California. He has a growing fantastic collection of airworthy WW1 aircraft, some with original powerplants. Javier attended one of the old airshows that were put on by Frank, but he as well has started his own venture in California and is now busy with that. Just ask Dan San, he is still grinning from his last experience there with Chuck Wentworth, (Javier's right hand man).
Our organization is a recognized tax-exempt 501 C-3 entity, and we are receiving donations to support our event. As I said, one of my goals has been to organize a form of transportation to get notable aircraft to the event. Since our event is held at the USAFM, we are NOT allowed to charge for admission, nor parking, nor can we solicit donations at the event, so you can see this has made it difficult for us to generate any revenue from the event. We are getting some donations and are working on corporate sponsorships, so we'll see how things develop. Most of us officers of the GWAA are located in the Midwest, like Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. This was how we started our relationship with the USAFM in Dayton, Ohio.
Other active "flying WW1 organizations" I need to mention are, Kermit Weeks in Florida, and Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in New York. I'm sure there are others I'm forgetting to mention, and forgive me.

Dave, please send me an application. I remember receiving the GWAA freebie newsletter when it was sent out after Frank Ryder died, but then I lost it and didn't apply. I'd love to be a member and am already making plans to attend the Dayton show in 2003. Joe Tamborello is building an SE5a here in Houston and I'm presently making wing ribs for another SE for Roger Freeman. I'm the "Tony" you refer to (I think) but I'm really Bill. Joe wants to bring his SE5 to Dayton. He's been in contact with Jack Kearbey who built the SE5a that was at your 2001 show. In fact, Jack is building an SE5a fuselage for Roger (the one for which I'm working on the wings) and Roger is up in Tulsa today to check on it. Anyway, we plan on giving Roger the nudge to attend in 2003. There are more of us volunteers now to help him and it would make great publicity for his Kingbury Aerodrome facility. 2001 was a rough year on Roger. He's been busy getting his business established at Kingsbury, having more hangars built, etc. We hope to have a Dr.1 finished by this summer, maybe even a D.VII as well. The SE5a is further down the line and Roger has picked up a Bristol F2B project with which I hope to be involved as well.
So I second Dave's call to join GWAA ! The future looks exciting for WWI flying.

We would love to have any of you Lone Star State aviation enthusiasts as well as the Kingsbury clan at our meet. *The Over the Front group will be having their meet at our fly-in as well, so there will be lots of interest for all WW1 av-fans.

Brad, the event is held in the fall every two years. The latest one was in 2001 so the next one will not be until 2003. I believe that it will be held near the AF Museum, Wright-Patt. AFB, in Dayton, Ohio. Stick with this bulletin board. There will be much about it, I am sure, as the months go by.
