Hello,

Last week I went to the library and got home with a Dutch translation of a book written by Enzo Angelucci and Paolo Matricardi about early aviation (1783-1918), but particularly WWI aviation.
They describe many planes - historical and technical- from Germany, France, Italy, England, America, Russia and Austria.
Reading about the Fokker Eindecker I came across the name von Gerstoff. He was -according to the authors- one of the early aces.
I asked myself: "Who is von Gerstoff"? I don't know him at all and not in the least as an ace. I searched for his name in The Jasta Pilots and in Above The Lines, but I found nothing.
At last I searched in Casualties Of The German Air Service by Norman Franks etc. and came across the name Ernst von Gersdorf (25 may 1878 - 19 june 1916).
I don't know if it is the same person, but maybe someone has info on this matter..........
I am very curious.

VBR,

Jos

Jos,

Hptm. Ernst von Gersdoff, pilot:

FFA 18 C.O. 1Aug14 - 20Oct15
FFA 32 C.O. 20Oct15 - 23Nov15
BAO 23Nov15 - 19Jun16 KIA Neuberg

Although a well-known pre-war flyer, I seriously doubt he was an 'ace'. R.

Ernst von Gersdorff did receive pilots licence 356 in the German series on the 24th January 1913.

von Gersdorf was commanding KGI when shot down over Neuburg near Verdun. *Norman Franks in his book Sharks Among Minnows credits Jean Chaput of N57 with the victory.
