On 24 July 1918 Ensign John C. Foster, USN Reserve, attached to No.214 Squadron for instruction, was in a Handley-Page aircraft that crashed on take-off. The aircraft caught fire. Foster and a Corporal E.A. Barber, although injured, extricated the pilot and got safely away just before the bombs (sixteen 112-pounders) exploded.
Foster was recommended for an award (AFC or Albert Medal suggested). Did he receive any decoration ? Barber did not (unless he was Mentioned in Despatches).
