I'm in a good mood to give away names today. And these were the guys that scored at least once !

Found these new ones of the unit :

- Flugobermatrose Neuber
- Flugzeugmatrose Marschel
- Flugobermatrose Poppe
- Flugobermatrose Ullman
- Flugmaat Danke
- Lt d R Hahn
- Flugmeister Hess
- Flugmaat Platte
- Lt z S Wall

Of the Seeflugstation Flandern I or II :

- Lt d R Wolff

and

- Oblt d R Höpken IV C Staffel
- Lt d R Stein IV C Staffel

All names after 19/05/18 in the units.

Hi Regulus

It seems that Stein arrived to SFS II(Ostende) on 26 June 1918 as observer..
He had earlier served on the famous ship SMS "Wolff"...!

I dont knew the date he scored a victory...I only have a guess that it perhaps could be the DH 4 on 22 Aug 1918..??

Do you have any idea..?

Hi Gunnar !

22/08/18 Oblt d R Höpken and Lt d R Stein shot down a DH in grid no 1004K over the North Sea. No hour was given. It was for both their first victory.

Hi Regulus

Thanks for that information. The time for the Höpken and Stein victory was ca 7:50....
The flew a/c 2523.

Höpken was a rather "old" man and pilot and was born on 6 April 1889.
He joined the Marine Air Force in September 1916 when posted to SFA II.
On 17 June 1917 was he promoted Oblt dR MA.
He was posted to SFS II(Ostende) on 11 November 1917 and the next day he took over the command of the squadron.
A command which he probably hold until the unit was dissolved in Oct 1918.
He also led IV C Staffel in battle while Frantz mostly led the II C Staffel.

You presented earlier some "new" victories for SFS I(Zebrügge) where you had a name Hintz..!
He is gone in your list above but you have Flugmaat Danke...
...when did Danke scored his victory..?

:-/

Hi Gunnar,

Ah, this is a tricky victory, it was on a U-boat ! Flugmaat Danke and Flugmeister Meyer attacked a British sub near the west outer Gabbert in square 1211K above the North Sea.
It was scored on the 6th july 1918.
I have the story somewhere, and I even recently read it, but will have to search it over again. *Will let you know about it as soon as I found it back. *Was in one of the Dover Patrol books I have. *As far as I remember the thing didn't really sink, but not completely shure about it.

Hi Regulus

I was apparently wrong about Alexander Steins rank which should be Lt dR MA.
He was born on 26 Dec 1890 and become officer(patent) on 16 July 1917.
In June 1915 he joined II Mar.Flg.Abt
In Aug 1915 he joined II SFA and in Nov 1916 he joined SMS "Wolff".....interesting career..!
In October 1918 he was "k.d.Flg.F.z.Vfg" until EOW..probably due the dissolvment of SFS II(Ostende)..

If Danke and Meyer got officially confirmation for the British U-boat they presumly received the Ehrenpreis but this cant be counted as an aerial victory in my meaning.....hope you can add some information...!

Hi Gunnar,

Seems that having the flu also stopped my brain for working normally

You know that sub story of Danke and Meyer ? Well, seems to be shockingly nothing else than C25. You know, the victory that also should/could/may stand on the Christiansen victories !

So question is if this was a Christiansen victory in fact. Anyone seen anyhting official on this ?

Oh and according to a document in Freiburg archives, the victory of Christiansen/Wladika should have been Fiede's fifth official victory ! It is getting very bizarr, if that shows up to be correct. What about the blabla in his recommendation for the PlM in this case ?

Mystery oh mystery ! :'(

Oh forgot this one Gunnar : Hintz did have a victory on the 13th august 1918, as a Flugzeugobservatore together with a Lt.d.R. Wolff at 2330 h near Oostende, above the sea.

Hi Regulus

Interesting that Wolff and Hintz victory was a night victory..!

Who will solve the so called "mystery" about Christiansen victories...

It seems that as more people search---the less is his real score of confirmed arerial victories.. 8)

The answer is certain to find in the archive in Freiburg...

I am rather convinced the "Wall" you mention above indeed is Lt zS Ludwig Wahl born 7 Aug 1895.

He was promoted officer on 17 Sep 1917.

In March 1917 he joined the I SFA for training.
In Sep 1917 he joined the SFS in Libau and was later transferred to SFS Reval.
In early June 1918 he joined SFS I(Zebrügge) as pilot where he is noted as serving until EOW....

Unfortunate I cant find the date he received the Seefliegerabzeichen... >

It's been a while since you guys were having this conversation so the discussion might be closed by now. Nevertheless I'd like to add some information.

According to Christiansens own version, as given in W. Zuerl, "Pour le Mérite Flieger" (München 1938), he was on patrol with four other planes when they sighted the C-25 west of Oxfordness. When they run out of ammo, another Staffel attacked, led by Leutnant der Reserve Becht.

Maybe Danke and Meyer belonged to one of these Staffels? By the way, another account of this attack situates it near the coast of Shipwash (whereever that may be).

Regards from René
