not sure whether this should be in aircraft but here goes. Mannock was in combat with a Fokker DVII sporting a swastika marking in June 1918. i have seen a photograph of Kunz of Jasta 7 in a scout (unidentified) but with a swastika marking. anyone know of any other fighter pilots (german) who adopted this personal marking?

Fritz Beckhardt, Jasta 26, used a swastika as his personal marking, for one example. What's ironic is - he was Jewish!

Spad:
Ltn. Paul Billik of Jasta 12 flew a Alb. D.III with a black swastika on the fuselase sides and also a black Alb. D.V with a white swastika. An unknown pilot in Jasta 37 flew a camouflage Rol. D.II with a white swastika painted on the fuselage sides and later a Alb. D.Va with black fuselage with a white swastikaon both sides of the fuselage aft of the cockpit and white 9 on both sides of the nose. The tailplane was painted in black and white diagonal stripes. The swastika was a world wide common symbol for good luck.
GOD bless America,

Lt. Werner Voß flew an Albatros D. III in mid 1917 with a swastika surrounded by an laurel wreath (?) and a red heart.
Originally the swastika was a GOOD LUCK symbol and several pilots had one on their aircraft. I´m not sure but the INDIAN HEAD emblem of the Escadrille Americaine originally had a small swastika too.
After WW I the NSDAP took the swastika as their party emblem and changed its meaning totally between 1933 and 1945.

There was also a Fokker Dr.I flown by an unknown aviator in Jasta 15 (I think, or was it Jasta 11?) with a black swastika on what's thought to be a turquoise background.

Several allied types carried a swastika as personal or unit marking like this for the 103rd. The sinister conotations came later.

I have seen a photo of Lufberry's SPAD with a large, black, swastika personal markinging front of the indian head. I haven't seen swastikas (large or small) on any other Lafayette Escadrille planes.
Best Regards,
Wayne

The swastika was inside the "bonnet" of the Indian head. Very small, and very difficult to see without a close up picture, but it's there.

Peter,
Thanks for the blow-up. I guess it's time for new glasses. 8) (Not cool just blind!)
