There are a couple copies of the boardgame "Aces High" available at Ebay. Is anyone familiar with this game? It was published by 3W in 1992. I'm wondering if it's worth bidding on. Since the box cover shows an SE-5 (my favorite WWI era plane) shooting somebody down, it can't be all bad.

Kirk,
I Bought a copy a few months ago. It is easy to learn and play. It covers all the planes from '14 to '18. The only draw back is the counters. The game does not have counters for all the planes represented. You can use any of the counters to represent, just use the specific plane stats for that plane. There is an add on game I think it is called American Aces and there was also another one that had to do with German Aces? I have played the game twice with a buddy and one time alone. It is Different from R's War by Avalon Hill & Dawn Patrol, the move sequence is different. If you are not paying more than 10.00 bucks for it it is worth buying. Have Fun

Stephen

There was an update, I think called "Red Baron" which was published in their magazine, World Wide Wargamer. It switched from using hexes to squares, and the movement points were changed from equaling 20mph to 10mph.

I thought it was a decent conversion. And the way Movement points were handled was interesting too.

Hmmmm, sounds a little like Dawn Patrol. I wonder which game came first?

Oops, sorry. If Aces High came out in '92 and Red Baron was a revamp of it, it obviously came out LONG after FiTS/Dawn Patrol.

Yup, Dawn Patrol is a bit older. Aces High/Red Baron is also one of those simultaneous movement system games.

It was designed by the same guy who designed Air Force/Dauntless waaaay back for Battleline.

BUT, he added ace movement rules and some other interesting things. Unfortunately, I don't remember much of anything other than the ace movement stuff.

But in the skills, there was a thing you could roll to see if your pilot was mechanically inclined. If so, it lowered the chance of jamming as it meant he did things like load his own machine gun belts/drums.
