Gentlemen,
The guys that are trying to write the Voss film are after me again. While I have limited confidence in its eventual production I do have a somewhat guarded enthusism for the idea.Ninety nine or more out of a hundred never get made but that one does.
That said, the question is how many flying SE 5 or SE 5a s are there in CON US? Are there any flying replicas of Albatroses or Albatri as Rhys-Davids would insist? Are there any two seaters? Is there a source for kits?
Best Regards to all,
Terry Crisp

I'm unaware of any flying SE-5s in the US though there are at least a couple of extremely fine repros on static display. Albatrii are better off. For two-seaters, there's one or two Strutters--maybe a Brisfir--but haven't heard of any REs or BEs.
Of course, those 2/3 SEs from Darling Lili would look just precious harrying a full-scale Dr.I!
We'd all love to see a GOOD Voss movie, but I think most forumites would just as soon forego most Hollywood versions.
Hmmm...wonder what Gloria Paul is doing these days...

I think there a few SE5a replicas flying in the US. Bobby Strahlman built 5, one of which can be seen flying in a photo in the most recent issue of World War I Aero. Jack Kearbey's SE5a, in Tulsa, may not have flown yet, but it should be flying very soon. A few months ago he was in the process of covering his masterpiece. Great craftsman! Joe Tamborello in Houston, Texas is building one now. He's well along with his fuselage. There are hints of others, but as for ones flying right now, I couldn't say (other than Strahlman's mentioned above).

Terry, you mentioned..........the Voss film. I've heard rumors about a film but nothing definite. Can you give any more details?

Wolfenbill,
* * Not to put toofine a point on it, you havn't heard anything definate because there is nothing definate.there may never be.The odds are heavily against any one script ever being produced.
* * I was working on the TV show SHEENA and got involved with some nice fellows who write scripts.I'm doing some ad hoc (and pro buono,I might add)consulting for them. We've not yet got the talking part done and it is with some trepidation that I anticipate reading their first draft.I have some guarded hope for this project but I would not bet the ranch.
Best regards,
Terry

Javier Arango has two (2) fullscale S.E.5a aircraft that are flyable. I saw them fly last June. plus twenty some other WW1 aircraft. Mind bogling array in 5 hangars on his own private grass airfield.
Bluer skies ahead,

What was the ultimate fate of the replicas used in "The Blue Max"?

IIRC, Javier Arango has one of the Pfalz replicas, and possibly one of the D.VII replicas. The other Pfalz is in Texas I think. At least one of the S.E.5s was destroyed in a fatal crash while making Darling Lili.

Come to think of it, I seem to remember seeing a picture of Frank Ryder with 4 or 5 of the Blue Max birds in his collection.

George Peppard bought one of the Morane N-7's that was used to represent the "New Monoplane" in the film for $500.00. I think it is the same one that is in the Rhinebeck collection now.

I think I saw Mr. Arango on a TV show called "First Flights" a few years ago. He's also got a 1 1/2 Strutter if I remember correctly.

Okay, we get Gena Lee Nolin (Sheena herself) to play Voss's girlfriend who lives in a nudist colony. After all, why not use your connections to good effect?

Seriously, though, there was an episode of "Young Indiana Jones" that featured WWI pilots and planes. I thought the flying sequences of that show were fantastic, and they were done mostly with models (1/16th scale IIRC). Obviously it would be nice to have real, full-sized planes in the air for a film, but models are cheaper and can be filmed in greater numbers.

Regards,
