Dear Terry,
I can well imagine your frustration. Here, for whatever it may be worth, is my opinion-- I think that's it's the operating system. Wasn't XP based on Windows 2000 and/or NT4? Well, neither one would play RB3D...
I did try some research, but I'm afraid that I could not find your error message. But, I think, here's what you can do (at least give me credit for originality in one or two cases!):
1) Check your memory chips; my guess is that the BRAND NEW ones are defective ('data transfer' = memory, at least to my warped way of thinking). Could you replace them with 'old' ones and see what happens?
2) Contact HP-- what's their take on the error message?
3) Contact Microsoft; on second thought, better not!
-BUT-
4) GO TO THE MS COMBAT FLIGHT SIMULATOR WEB PAGE--
perhaps you could read about someone with a similar problem (yes, yes, I KNOW that this is RB3D; just do it to humor an old man, okay?); at the very least, you could become a member of THEIR forum, and POST your problem!
5) Regarding #1-- if the memory WAS defective, seriously consider returning the damn computer!
-AND-
6) Would you be willing to nuke your hard drive (which you could always 'restore') and install Windows 98? Then see what happens...
One last thought, Terry-- OBVIOUSLY, it wasn't JUST the game! Something is (obviously) very wrong if almost nothing seems to install... you might very well have a lemon.
BTW; 'jonesing'? 'Threw a seven'? What the hell you talkin' 'bout, man?
VBR,
Captain Lewis
