Rick:
I ask you to turn to OTF, Vol.16, No.3. page 207 and back inside cover. The marking on this Alb. C.XII are identical to Schusta 23b. What do you have on Ltn. Emil Huber,(P), the caption identifies this machine from Fl.Abt.(A) 291b. The date is 22 July 1917, and the location as, between Faubourg and Pavy.
Blue skies,
Dan

Dan,

* * *I also noticed the simularity. *Just coincidence I guess. *Ltn. Emil Huber's unit is given as FA 291(A)b in both the Ehrentafel and the Bavarian Ehrenbuch, and both sources as well as von Eberhardt agree on his place of death - Verdun.

* *Conversly, the Order of Battle of Schusta 23b shows they were in 4th Armee from 12Jun17 until March 1918 when they prepared for The Great Battle in France. *Verdun is a heck of a long way from 4th Armee!!

To compound things, Schusta 23b NEVER served as the escort for FA 291(A)b, as far as I can tell.

* * *The only other obvious choice is that the photo is mis-identified, and it is not Huber's fatal crash???

Rick:
To complicate matters more, Schusta 23b had Alb. C.XII machines in 1917. Oh well, I think the photo might be misidentified. Where was Schusta 23b on 22 July 1917? If they are opposite the French, It might fit!
Blue skies,
Dan

* * *Schusta 23b was at Ingelmunster in the 4th Armee. * From 12Jun17 to 10Mar18. * * *R.

Dan,

If so, we have to examine Ss 23b losses - and not just those KIA (two people MIGHT have walked away from that mess). Looking at only combat losses, not the IIC,KIC:

18Mar17 Lorenz/Mohr, KIA, Aspach
11May17 Büttner/Baer, KIA, Merlet, S. St. Fergeux
20Sep17 Möhlenbeck/Bitzer, KIA , Paschendaele

Didn't find anybody taken POW. Since the aircraft is shown surrounded by French soldiers, my best guess is either the 18Mar and/or 11May17 losses. The KrStR is not big on aircraft types flown when a crew is lost.

And those are the only ones that might fit an Alb. C.XII.

You should email your concerns about the misidentified photo to Al Roesler and Bill Bailey both. They can put in a correction in "Despatches" in OTF.

Cigogne,

All well and good, but we could be WAY OFF in our attempted identification here. Besides I am sure Bill Bailey has already read all these posts!! R.
