Thanks, Bob. I need all the luck I can get. One of my main shows just got cancelled. *;D
The web site text is horribly out of date. Check back in a week or so. My webmaster is already late getting it updated.
Now quick... somebody say something about Rickenbacker before Captain Lewis has our hides.

Rick never finished second in the Indianapolis 500. He competed in the race four times: 1912, and 1914-16, with a best finish of 10th in 1914.

Stephen, dear, go back and read the FIRST message again. The quote didn't say "finished second" it said "you were IN the second Indianapolis 500"
Hello????

Rickenbacker to Bronx racing; We are all anxiously awaiting the forthcoming Rickenbacker book by Prof. David Lewis from Auburn. I've seen several of the (almost) final manuscripts and there will be a great deal of fresh information. David made several trips here, to do research on EVR's racing history as it is recorded in my bound volumes of early auto magazines, which I obtained from the late, great Alec Ulmann. He said he had not been able to find such information at Library of Congress or NASM.and was delighted to have the contemporary reports by real racing reporters. David made extensive revisions to the chapters he had written on EVR's auto racing history. They not only recorded the lap-by-lap record of each early Indy race, but also those of the ever- changing designs of the Maxwell race team and also all the dirt tracks and other major races all over the country where Eddie ran with the other great names and teams of the era.
Having stayed on topic, I can now add on a little note to above. I went to send an off-list note to BobE but he is unlisted. I would like to offer him a site to look at our 45 photos of the old race car days in The Bronx from midgets at Kinsbridge Armory to Malcom Campbell's "Bluebird" LSR car and the most exotic 1950's Euro custom racers ever seen. Contact me off-list, if you wish.

Fortunately, Dan, F-1 refers to itself as the "World Driving Championship," not the "World Racing Championship."
I have no doubt that most F-1 drivers could wring the last thousandth of a second out of any car on any traffic-free road course, and whip anyone dumb enough to challenge them.
But hurling your car into turn four at Indy, with cars six inches away on each side of you and a cement wall in front of you at 235 mph is a whole different ball game.
F-1 has the greatest technical drivers on the planet... but the greatest racers still come to Indy.

Alright, how about this?
I really don't mind the direction that this thread has taken-- after all, Rickenbacker WAS a race-car driver...
So why don't you take D'Olive's comment concerning airfighting, and apply it to the Oval?
Don't mind me, gentlemen; just talk among yourselves...

Now if you actually look at the posts you'll find that I did not initiate any racing dialogue whatsoever - I only responded to racing content already posted.
So not only am I innocent of The Great Transgression, I am actually a victim!

Pay no attention to that cat. (Sorry Capt. Couldn't resist)
Stephen,
Sorry to hear about the show cancellation. That really hurts when your in the process of raising a family. If it's any consolation, I've had a few career disasters myself over the years and strangely enough I always ended up better off after the dust settled. Glad I'm in my "Golden Years". Nothing to worry about except dieing.
Joe,
Thanks so much for your offer. Sent you a private message today. Incidentally, the game board I mentioned is 2'x4' not 2'x2'.
O.K. Sincere apologies to Capt. Lewis. I just had to get this stuff out. With respect to Rickenbacker I have always been surprised at how little is generally said about him in the general histories of the air war. Actually, now that I think of it,the same can be said about Fonck. It's kind of like they were so good at what they did that there opponents just dropped without any colorful fights to describe. Then again ,maybe their personalities make it hard for people to identify with them so they don't get much hype. Rick certainly had an interesting enough career. There. Now I put the thread back on track.

P.S. I notice we lost Spellcheck. They actually want to get paid for it now. Shocking!

BobE: I just recently noticed that as well. I reported it to Scott in the "Problems" area.
I'm off to hide in the clouds for awhile so I can avoid Capt. Lewis' scolding of straying off the thread topic.
*Heads for the clouds*
