From Casablanca to FEZ
Hi!
Just found a page of L'Illustration with a photo of the Bréguet landed at Meknès on the flight by Brégi from Casablanca to Fez (Not "Fen"!)
A Senegalize soldier (from the French-Morrocan Légion d'Honneur!)standing watch...(The so called Morrocan (these were horseman!) or Senegalize SPAHIS (The black soldiers) wich were feared by the Germans ont French and Belgian front WWI! They had no fear at all in fight!)
Nearly Din A3 page size!
The annotations by the photo tells that René Lebaut was a reporter of the French magazine "Le Petit Journal" and the flight was sponsored by this magazine (they tell it's "the plane of Le Petit Journal")
Indeed "raid" stood in principle for "long distance flights" !
They started at Casablanca on 19th September 1911 at 6 a.m. to the coast at Rabat (80 km) and had to wait to continue their fligth for Meknès until 19th September due to severe winds and made flight of 1 h 45' over 135 km.
At Meknès they stayed the nightover and the next day (20th September) they made the last lap of 60 km to arrive at Fez into 1 h.30'!
It was a pure civil flight for perhaps publicity reasons and to please the Morrocan Sultan (?)
Not a word about eventually "Airmail" on this flight carried!
But certainly not a military raid one!
