Have you thought about removing the grips, filling them (or running a bead along the edges) with "Goop" (vinyl-type sealant) and reattaching the grips? Goop dries pretty solid/dense, but remains flexible, so it would more than handle recoil. Since the grips are plastic, I think, if you weren't satisified, the Goop could be pulled off fairly easily (and I'm sure it would not stick permanently to oiled metal), so even trying it wouldn't permanently mess up your piece.
