I have no idea how such a nickname might have arisen, but I do recall that
Billy Bishop became the first and only foreign member of the German Ace Association at a luncheon in his honor at the Berlin Aero Club.
Although he had been honored for having shot down more German aircraft than any other British flyer, Bishop noted that he should also be considered as
Germany's greatest ace, having destroyed more allied aircraft through his skill at landing than all the assembled German aces combined.
