You are correct about copyrights, But it was not just the US, it seems this all came from The BERNE CONVENTION. the author plus 50 years plus.
Tried to read US copyright law but as usual its in Adobe. But "if the author gives permission" rules as in the topic statement. So you post does not apply.
With a good Lawyer, I could defeat any copyright law. The law is soooo ambiguous with some may qualifications. No problem.
