About the lenght of the film, my point of view is that at least the first part of the combat should be edited to make it shorter and keep the interest of the audience.
Just thinking... it would be better for rendering to make two versions of the planes, a low res one for distant scenes and another very high res model complete with interior, etc, to be used when the virtual camera is on that aircraft. You don't need to model turnbuckles for the rigging if the plane is going to be rendered from a mile away. If you need something please contact me.
