Ciao
Iwik, who regularly buys WM, rarely Replic, and is now off the list of purchasers of Figurines.
The short answer would be subjects, but...

The only readily available American hobby magazine is Fine Scale Modeler and it has become a hollow shell of of what it was a long time ago. Both Replic and Wingmasters (in particular) have first rate models with first rate photography. Even though I can't speak French, I can, with the help of a dictionary, generally read the text. Their how-to sections are very clear and informative and the "photoscope" sections usually have rarely seen pictures on this side of the pond. Beyond the high quality of the publications (coming at a high price), the choice of subjects is more in tune with my tastes. FSM tends to cater to the F-4/F-16/F-15 crowd and the tired rehash of P-51/Bf-109/Fw-190 builds. Only rarely do they cover anything slightly esoteric and very rarely in much detail.

With regards to armor, the US publication Military Miniatures in Review is first rate, but publication dates can be hit and miss. Steelmasters almost always has an article about either French or British armor and that again caters to my taste in armor.

Edit: I forgot about a relatively new US magazine called Aerospace Modeler. The quality seams to be pretty high, but since it only covers US subjects it's not of much interest to me.
