Pale Red Baron

I watched a downloaded version of the film in German. It has been 25+ years since I had an instructor tell me "Auf Deutch bitte!" but I could follow the plot. It was better that Corman's Baron. It had a lot of the same flaws as "Flyboys". Both films could have used a lot more live action shots. Crowded CGI scenes crop up in both films. Both films manage to screw up real life stories that were entirely dramatic enough in real life. At least "Der Rote Baron" had a wider variety of CGI aircraft and represented some actual people although I'm not sure that they were all flying with MvR. A lot more could have been done the theme of how stressful life was for a combat pilot. The affair with the Nurse was way overdone. "Band of Brothers" proves that you can make a historically based screen play that works without a romance that didn't happen (at least not as portrayed in the movie). There are lots technical things that are incorrect. Rocker arms move at the wrong speeds, Triplanes fly night intercept mission and pilots casually shoot observation balloons with flare guns as they fly by. Those are just a fraction of the glaring errors. But then, The web site quotes the director as saying that he was making a drama not a documentary. Complaints aside it is better than nothing and if it ever shows up on an English language DVD I will probably buy it.
