A bit more on the MvR film in pre-production

Thanks for the link to the flight sim that Catfish posted. Impressive footage but not to my taste.

It may please you all to know that I am going to great lengths to make sure that all the flying sequences in MANFRED will NOT look like flight sims!

As a Director, I have a very real problem with the approach that CGI offers when it comes to the "Eye of God". It's the nature of CGI that this kind of objective camerawork is often the most obvious to go for and explains why so many others go down that road.

Having sat in the front seat of an open cockpit, I really want to try to capture the subjective sensation of quite what it was like to be in a First World War plane in a dogfight and the "Eye of God" will not give us this.

Consequently, I plan to construct the flying sequences with a subjective camera wherever possible. The brief I am giving is that we need to be in the cockpit with the Pilots, either "over their shoulder" or viewing the action from their "point of view" wherever possible and try to avoid the third party CGI cliches of the "Eye of God" shots at all costs.

I don't yet have any footage to show you (and won't until the beginning of next year at the earliest) but when I do, I'll make sure you all get to see a sneak preview!

Meanwhile, does anyone know where I can track down some very cost effective full size Albatros biplane fighters? The plan is to shoot in the UK next summer so if they are not in the UK, can they be brought here without too much expense? They don't need to be flying replicas as we don't intend for them to leave the ground. However, rather than budget for the Art Department to mock up some, I'd so much rather use pre-existing planes.

So then, anyone know anyone who can help source these planes?

If so, email me at info at christophernicholson dot com

Thanks!
