Hi Doug
I have been working with cellulose finishes for over 30 years, some of it comes as water white fresh from the can which is totally clear with no tint but much of the earlier laquers I worked with were a light golden honey colour. The amber ageing would be quite strong after 10 years or so however I doubt the short active life in a war scenario would have allowed the clear dope to yellow very much. I also assume that the finishes on the aeroplanes were kept to a minimum to keep weight down. i think it would be usefull to keep your lozenge as a fresh from the factory finish and let individuals tone down the finish themselves maybe with Tamiya clear orange/yellow/smoke.
Keep up the good work
Cheers
Andrew
