Absent a Byline?
Barrett
It is not at all surprising that the article did not carry a byline. During
the "glory days" of journalism, from the late 19th Century through the
middle of the 20th, reporters regard themselves as working stiffs and
tradesmen just doing a job. Look at "The Front Page" (the play and movie
versions) by Charles MacArthur & Ben Hecht to get the classic portrayal.
There was no hint of the cult of personality and quasi-celebrity that
taints the enterprise of journalism in our time. If this reporter's managing
editor did not want to give him a byline--for ANY reason-- that was the end of the discussion. Reporters who worked their way up the ladder to become
columnists were a different animal; they did develop followings, and they
no longer had to worry about bylines. Fonck came across very well here--
merci beaucoup, xjouve!
