insulating the intake pipes is to keep the fuel air mixture temp from changing i thank. you know hot air is less dense. as it is the German habit of running there intake air through the crank case tunnels heat the air up also and the motor would have a power loss if the air gets to thin do to heated air let alone with alt. but it works great as carb heat{ carb ice} that problem they fix with preheated air.. asbestos wrap is not tape it is a cord and i thank it is dipped in wall paper past and wrapped around the pipe or tubing and is off white in color and might be painted black i have been asked to insulate exhaust headers to make free power HP it was for a 750 HP CAMARO 1969 Doug
