An OX-5, OXX-6 or a Hisso would be awesome but I guess I'm not quite the purist. My thought was to build up a steel tube fuselage with a Ranger ala Tallmantz.

I'm generally not a big fan of auto conversions, but if you're only trying to replace 90hp, it seems like one of the all aluminum V8's (which nowadays are plentiful) could exceed that, even at 2000 RPM. 2000 is more than the OX's turned but at least it's not 5000 going into a re-drive. At 2000, you're still turning a fairly large prop. The R-985 Pratt turns a 9' prop at 2300 RPM. For less than the cost of an OX or Hisso or even a Ranger, you could use all the high quality after market components for reliability.

Do you know of anyone using an automotive V8?
