CarlT, I preshaded the ribs with a black permanent pen, than airbrushed CDL and finally postshaded along the ribs with a mix of clear gloss and dark tan. I do so when the top surface of the wings has a colour like PC10.
As for the full wing transparency effect I do not want to discourage you but in my opinion it is hopeless. Even if you succeed in painting the blurred internal structure elements and possibly the translucing top wing top markings the effect is not good. The point is that in reality this effect is visible when the light comes downwards throught the wing. In your even best painted model the effect will be only visible when your light goes upwards from under the wing and this makes the whole business unrealistic
I have tried my best with Hansa Brandenburg D.I and Sopwith Baby which I showed here at The Drome earlier. And my conclusions are as above
