One simple thing, often overllooked, that can ruin the day, (especially with children)...
Don't forget to bring some sunblock/sunscreen, and I would also suggest a wide brimmed hat.
Children also enjoy it more when they get to take their own photos, so giving them a disposable camera, or letting them use your point & shoot digital camera,will give them some great memories and something to enjoy and talk about for a long time after the visit.
