I've successfully used SNJ spray metal for both engine turned aluminium (Sopwith Triplane) and the more random effect on Fokkers. I don't have any pictures and my Tripe didn't survive the last house move. The technique was to spray the SNJ as per instructions and then use the burnishing powder and a pointed felt polisher in a dremel. A series of regular close spots for engine turning and more freehand for the Fokkers, using just the tip of the polisher in both cases. Not an exact replica but a variation in shade and tone which gives the right effect, these were all in 1:48.
