The picture shows a Curtiss Model HS-1L, where HS stands for Model H Single engine (The Model H series was twin-engined) and the L stood for Liberty (engine). The machine was a three-bay biplane single engine (Liberty) pusher with a front cockpit where the observer could wield a Lewis machine gun mounted on a ring. The next development - the Model HS-2L - had a four-bay biplane wing construction.
