He was longing for the war to be over so as to go up to Oxford. *He told me he always carried a small volume of Blake's poetry in his pocket in case he should be shot down on the other side. *He also said to me one day. *`The Buddists have got a maxim, "Don't be stupid". *That's all that matters in life.` *He was passionately fond of books and poetry, and his mixture of scholarship, enthusiasm, fun, courage, skill and airmanship made one feel that if these were the sort of pilots we had, whatever else might happen, we should never be beaten in the air.
